Wildlife and Hiking Adventures
The park hosts 76 mammal species, including the giant forest hogs, bush pigs, forest buffaloes, elephants, bushbucks, golden cats, side-striped jackals, and black-fronted duikers. Though the dense forest vegetation makes spotting these animals challenging, lucky visitors on forest walks may encounter duikers and buffaloes.
Mgahinga takes its name from Mount Gahinga, one of three extinct volcanoes that dominate the park’s landscape and are part of the scenic Virunga Ranges.

The Enchanting Border Park
These volcanoes—Mount Gahinga, Mount Sabinyo, and Mount Muhavura—offer thrilling hiking opportunities:
Mount Sabinyo (3,669m): Known as “Old Man’s Teeth” for its jagged slopes, this volcano offers a rare opportunity to stand in Uganda, Rwanda, and the Democratic Republic of Congo simultaneously. The challenging 14-kilometer round trip takes about 8 hours to complete.
Mount Gahinga (3,474m): Gahinga means “a pile of small stones.” This hike, which takes approximately 6 hours, often includes sightings of golden monkeys in the bamboo forests.
Mount Muhavura (4,127m): The highest peak in the park, Muhavura rewards hikers with breathtaking views of Lake Edward, the Virunga volcanoes, Bwindi Impenetrable Forest, and the Rwenzori Mountains. The 12-kilometer hike takes around 8 hours round trip.
