The Majestic Border Mountain

This park, home to the largest surface area of any extinct volcano globally (50 km by 80 km), is the fourth highest mountain in Eastern Africa and the second-highest peak in Uganda. The park is a haven for wildlife enthusiasts, offering sightings of leopards, hyenas, buffaloes, bushbucks, waterbucks, duikers, and tree hyraxes. At the summit, visitors can explore a massive crater, over 40 kilometers in diameter, surrounded by rugged peaks.

Hiking and Trekking Routes

For those seeking adventure, Mount Elgon offers various trekking routes. The Forest Exploration Centre provides three “day” trails, ranging between 3 and 7 kilometers, ideal for experiencing the park’s unique flora and fauna. A recently opened 11-kilometer trail leads to the enormous Tutum Cave, passing through diverse vegetation and offering wildlife sightings, including Black and White Colobus Monkeys and numerous bird species. The park has two main trailheads for longer treks to the mountain’s peaks. The Sasa Trail (Buddukiro trailhead) is the most accessible from Mbale and offers a direct but steep ascent through bamboo forests. For a gentler climb, the Piswa Trail (Kapkwata trailhead) is recommended, passing through the Podocarpus forest, a hotspot for wildlife viewing. The full trekking circuit takes 4-5 days to complete, with the park’s information clerks available to help plan your journey.

Camping and Park Guidelines

Camping is a popular activity in Mount Elgon National Park, with five designated campsites along the trekking circuit. Visitors are advised to camp only at these sites to protect the park’s environment. Camping in the caldera is prohibited. Essential equipment, including tents and sleeping bags, can be hired through the park office in Mbale. It’s essential to bring a warm jacket, rain gear, and a fuel-efficient stove to minimize the impact on the park’s resources.

Supporting local communities is encouraged by hiring certified guides and porters. These guides have received training in natural and cultural histories, first aid, and communication. Porters assist by carrying gear, preparing meals, and setting up camp. For added safety, a park ranger escort is mandatory when visiting the calderas or ascending the peaks.

Mount Elgon’s diverse ecosystems range from montane forests and bamboo belts to heath and moorland zones, home to several endemic plant species like Giant Lobelia and groundsels.
