The Central Circuit Trail
This seven-day climb provides a comprehensive tour of the high Rwenzori, offering an unforgettable adventure for seasoned climbers. The trek begins at the Mihunga trailhead, ascending the Bujuku Valley through Nyabitaba for acclimatization before reaching the towering peaks. The trail then takes you through the Scott Elliot and Freshfield passes, descending through the Mubuku Valley. While some climbers opt to scale the snow-covered peaks, many find the spectacular scenery alone to be a sufficient reward for their efforts.
Kilembe Trail
For those seeking a less crowded path, the Kilembe Trail, recently reopened, offers a stunning alternative. Starting from Kilembe near Kasese, this trail climbs the southern slopes of the Rwenzori Mountains, passing through the beautiful Nyamwamba Valley. Along the way, hikers will encounter glacial lakes and breathtaking viewpoints before joining the Central Circuit at Lake Kitandara. The standard route includes scaling Mount Baker, although shorter treks are equally rewarding due to the trail’s captivating landscapes.
The Rwenzori Mountains are a bird watcher's paradise, with numerous species to spot, including several Albertine Rift endemics. Some notable species include: Handsome Francolin Rwenzori Turaco Montane Nightjar Dwarf Honeyguide Archer’s Robin-Chat Red-throated Alethe Kivu Ground Thrush Blue-headed, Regal, and Purple-breasted Sunbirds Strange Weaver Dusky and Shelley’s Crimsonwings Other significant sightings may include the African Long-eared Owl, Lammergeiger, and Red-thighed Sparrowhawk.
