Kidepo Valley National Park, located in Karamoja, is one of Uganda’s major parks.
Spanning 540 square miles, this remote park is renowned for its stunning savannah landscapes that stretch far into the horizon. It’s a haven for wildlife, boasting over 500 bird species and more than 80 mammal species. During a game drive, you’re likely to encounter lions, giraffes, buffaloes, spotted hyenas, cheetahs, and ostriches—only found in this park. For the adventurous, hiking on Mount Morungole offers a thrilling experience.
The Karamojong and Ik people, residing near the park, offer visitors an enriching cultural experience. A visit to a Karamojong village hut, known locally as a Manyatta, provides an authentic glimpse into African village life. The Ik people, although physically similar to the Karamojong, have distinct cultural practices. This small tribe of about 11,000 is known for its polygamous traditions, where men marry multiple wives, often determined by the number of beehives they own. A respected man may possess up to 50 beehives, offering five to ten as bride price. The first wife holds a unique status, and the practice of wife inheritance after divorce or widowhood is common.
