Home to the Most Powerful Waterfalls

The park is characterized by a lush landscape featuring Borassus palms, wetlands, and savannah woodlands, making it a stunning destination for nature lovers. The park’s most iconic feature is Murchison Falls, where the Nile River dramatically plunges through a narrow 7-meter-wide gorge, falling 43 meters into the river below and creating a breathtaking rainbow as it flows toward Lake Albert.

Uhuru Waterfalls

Adjacent to Murchison Falls is Uhuru Falls, which formed in 1962 during a period of heavy rainfall, the same year Uganda gained independence. The downpour caused part of the Nile to divert, creating this second waterfall. Together, Murchison Falls and Uhuru Falls present a spectacular twin-falls display, offering visitors a unique and awe-inspiring view.

Wildlife

Murchison Falls National Park is a sanctuary for diverse wildlife, boasting 76 mammal species and 451 bird species. Once heavily impacted by poaching, the park’s wildlife has rebounded thanks to conservation efforts. Visitors can witness large herds of elephants, buffaloes, giraffes, and the elusive leopards. Lions, Uganda Kobs, and Hartebeests also roam the savannah, while the Nile’s banks are home to hippos and crocodiles, the latter often seen basking in the sun.

Bird enthusiasts will find Murchison Falls National Park a paradise, with species such as the Green-winged Ptyilia, White-rumped Seedeater, Verreaux's Owl, Goliath Heron, Saddle-billed Stork, Grey-crowned Crane, and the elusive Shoebill at the Albert Delta. Boat rides to the bottom of Murchison Falls offer an up-close experience of the falls’ power, while another boat trip to the Albert Delta provides a serene setting to observe the Nile’s flow into Lake Albert and spot a variety of bird species.
