Semuliki National Park is home to over 400 bird species and 53 mammals, making it a hotspot for bird watchers and wildlife lovers.
Semuliki is also known for its rich diversity of primates, including Mangabeys, Blue Monkeys, and chimpanzees. The park’s lush vegetation includes over 305 recorded tree species, creating an ideal habitat for both primates and birds.
The park is surrounded by four ethnic groups: the Bwamba farmers who live along the base of the Rwenzori Mountains, the Bakonjo who cultivate the mountain slopes, the Batuku cattle keepers who inhabit the open plains, and the Batwa pygmies, traditionally hunter-gatherers, who live on the forest’s edge. Visitors can engage with these communities through cultural encounters, including walks to the Batwa community, traditional dances, and storytelling sessions. These experiences provide a unique insight into the lives and traditions of the people living near the park.
Nature walks in Semuliki offer visitors the opportunity to explore the park’s diverse ecosystems, where you might encounter various primates, as well as bird species like Honeyguides, Palm-nut Vultures, and different Hornbills. The walks are a serene way to experience the natural beauty and tranquility of this tropical forest.
